Are You Wasting Precious Time? - Real Life Real Estate

Are You Wasting Precious Time?

Are you wasting precious time?

Is your business a lean, mean, efficient machine?

If you answered, “Hmm, I never thought about it?”

You are in good company.

Most Realtors don’t take the time to think about their business.

If you ask them why, they will tell you that they’re too busy.

Yet  they didn’t stop to consider that they may not be that busy if they ran their business with greater efficiency.

Now is the time to take stock of your business.

What are you doing well?

What areas need improvement?

Let’s Talk About Your Time

Your time is your most valuable commodity.

How much of it do you waste?

Consider how you use your 24 hours each day.

Let’s suppose you sleep for 8 hours each night and you work 8 hours each day.

That leaves you 8 hours every single day to do whatever you please.

But you still say, you don’t have time.

My father used to say, “People make time for things they want to do.”  But that’s another article for another time.

Chances are, you do have time if you run an efficient business.

What Does Your Workday Look Like?

Given the breakdown described in the previous paragraph, let’s assume you work 8 hours every day.

What exactly are you doing during those 8 hours?

How much time do you schedule for:

  • Making phone calls to your sphere of influence, current and past clients
  • Making cold calls
  • Writing notes
  • Social media
  • Writing offers
  • Processing transactions
  • Searching the multiple listing service
  • Showing property
  • Researching properties
  • Following up with clients, lenders, title companies, etc.
  • Running CMA’s
  • Negotiating offers
  • Conducting home inspections
  • Attending settlement

Real estate agents have a lot to do to get clients and ensure a transaction gets to settlement on time.

The question becomes, how much time do you allot for each of these activities on any given day?

Parkinson’s Law

Most people have heard of Murphy’s Law, yet few are familiar with Parkinson’s Law.

Parkinson’s Law has become my favorite and helps keep me focused and on task.

To paraphrase, Sir Cyril Parkinson’s law states that activities expand to the time we give them.

For example, if you give yourself one hour to check your email.  It will take you one hour.

If we apply Parkinson’s law and you give yourself 15 minutes to check your email, it will take you 15 minutes.

This is why time blocking is so effective.

Time blocking doesn’t allow activities to take on a life of their own.  There is a clear time for completion.

Become More Efficient

Have you ever noticed that when you have a full day, you somehow manage to get everything done?

On the flip side, when you don’t have much to do, it takes you all day to do those few tasks?

Wouldn’t it be great to be efficient with your time everyday?

It’s simple, and here’s how.

Each evening write out what activities you want to work on the following day.

Beside each task, write the amount of time you will work on each task.

When you wake up the next morning you will have a sense of peace about you because you know what you want to do during the day.

You will be focused and less likely be distracted.

When you use your time efficiently, you can get more work completed in a shorter period of time.

And the best part?

After you complete your list, you can stop working without feeling guilty.

You can actually enjoy your time off and possibly unplug.

The bottom line, when you work, really work.

Be prosperous!
