What's Your Excuse? - Real Life Real Estate

What’s Your Excuse?

I often write about real estate agents who get in the way of the transaction.  But today is a little different.  As a trainer I am seeing more and more agents get in the way of their own success.

At First Glance You May be Thinking That This Statement is Ridiculous

While at first glance you may be thinking that this statement is ridiculous…everyone wants to be successful. I would argue that while most people “say” they want to be successful, painfully few agents are willing to put in the time, energy and work to achieve that success.

Each Week I Ask My Real Estate Newbies

Each week I ask my real estate newbies to tell me about their week.  Although they can tell me that they were working with one client, checking the MLS and previewing a few properties, very few can tell me what marketing or prospecting they did…and that’s the real work.  It is so easy to fool ourselves into thinking that we are “working” when really all we are doing is going through the motions.  If you haven’t spoken to someone who wants to buy or sell (or knows someone who wants to buy or sell) you haven’t paved the way to success.

The Real Work is in The Prospecting

In this age of technology it is so easy to be passive and send an email.  But it’s far too easy for an email to be ignored or worse, deleted.  So I say, give them a quick call.   The excuse…”my people don’t like to be called”.  Okay, then send a handwritten note…”that’s just too corny for me”.   Well, how about attending some social or networking events…”I don’t want to sound like I’m begging for business”.  So the question becomes, how are you going to get business?

The Answer is Simple, You Won’t

The answer is simple, you won’t and without business you won’t be a successful real estate agent. You have to stop the excuses, get out your own way and start asking for business.  You don’t have to be obnoxious about it, just wait until the opportunity presents itself and ask.  And trust me, the opportunity will present itself.  Everyone thinks they are a real estate expert based on the amount of press the industry gets.  So when they hear you are a Realtor you could be in for a long conversation. Of course you could wait for a good call to come in when you are on floor duty or get a client at an open house, but that’s just a little to random.

So Stop Making Excuses and Get Out There

Let the world know that you are a Realtor and now is a great time to buy or sell real estate…here’s to your success! Be prosperous!

Hey I started my own business after having worked for other real estates companies. I sometimes still feel as if I am still working for someone. The agents I normally work with just sit back and call to say they want commission. I do all the hard work. I want to start making money for myself but I don’t understand where I going wrong. I get a lot of properties and clients on a daily basis but still I am in debt kindly assist
