You Don't Know What You Don't Know - Real Life Real Estate

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

“I know how to prospect”…”I know how to market myself”…”I know how to get a listing”…”so I don’t need training”.

You DO Need Training

I constantly hear this from agents, new and old…or should I say “more experienced” agents. But how do you tell someone politely that, yes, you DO need real estate agent training because you don’t know what you don’t know.

Successful Agents Get Training

Most new real estate agents come from another career where they were successful.  But while they may think they know what to do to become successful as a real estate agent, it’s good to get some guidance right off the bat.  I believe it’s wise to attend training sessions that will  help them actually set up their business and learning how to talk with perspective clients.  Most other careers have a supervisor telling you when to show up, what to do , when to do it and when you can leave.  This doesn’t happen in real estate…you are completely on your own.

You Can Get Overwhelmed and Frustrated

So while you may think you know what to do, you will quickly find out you haven’t a clue where to even start.  And truth be told, it can be a little overwhelming…and without proper training, it can be frustrating.  Here are just a few skills I think you need to have to become a successful real estate agent:

Attend Training

This is your opportunity to learn best practices from your peers, hear about market conditions and hear different ways of looking at the same situation.

Talk to Your Manager

No, your manager won’t be giving you leads, but they can provide one-on-one guidance…coaching or mentoring. Your manager is the perfect person to help you plan out your success and hold you accountable.

Set a Schedule

In the corporate world you had a schedule and real is estate should be no different.  Schedule your day so you will be efficient and productive.  Schedule your calls, your administrative tasks, your showings, etc.  Without a schedule your day tends to get away from you. These are just my Top 3 tips that I think new real estate agents need to do to start their business on the right foot.  It is far too easy to take each day as it comes…whatever I get to, I’ll do.  If this is your business philosophy you probably won’t last long.  Treat your business like a business.  When you work, really work, so you can relax without guilt when you do take some time off.

Are You Great?

I would love to say that you are guaranteed success simply by completing your real estate class and passing your licensing exam.  Unfortunately,  it just doesn’t work that way.  I read a while ago that it takes 10,000 hours to become great at anything.  The study cited greats like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Hillary Clinton.  If it takes 10,000 hours to become great, my question to you becomes, are you willing to do what it takes to become a great real estate agent? Be prosperous!
