Are you tired of struggling in your real estate business? Do you wish there was a magic wand to give you some clients? Are you looking for a short cut to success? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, perhaps you made the wrong career choice. To be a successful real estate agent you have to learn the art of the hustle…and I’m not talking about the dance.
Hustle is a Good Thing
The term hustle can be viewed in a negative manner or a positive manner. This blog is about the positive manner. Every successful real estate agent knows how to hustle. If you ask any of them how they got started, they will tell you a tell of struggle, long hours and self doubt. Everybody goes through it. There are painfully few overnight successes in real estate. Success begins with the hustle and the hustle begins with you putting yourself “out there” for the world to see. The art of the hustle is all about your work ethic. It’s not that you necessarily work hard, it’s that you are focused and diligent when it comes to working. In other words, when you work, you really work…you put the time in and you see the results.
“I’m a Real Estate Agent”
Why is it we feel as though we are begging for business or bugging people when we talk about our jobs? Everyone else is allowed to speak freely about their chosen profession, but real estate agents don’t talk about their jobs because they don’t want to appear to be pushy and always asking for business. But there are ways to ask for business and not be obnoxious about it. For example, when you are attending a social event it is common to talk to people you know and ask how things are going on their job. This is a great way to get a conversation going because most people LOVE talking about themselves. At some point however, they will realize how they have been dominating the conversation and will ask you about your job. This is the perfect time to talk about the properties you have seen…the good, the bad and the ugly and then ask them who they know who could benefit from your expertise. That’s the art of hustle.
Everyone Knows About What We Do
It’s easy to get a conversation going about real estate because what we do is always in the news in one way or another. As a result, people think they understand what it is we do. Lucky for us, most times the information they have is incorrect because real estate is extremely local and most of what they hear is national. You can instantly show them that you are the local expert by nicely correcting their misinformation. That’s the art of the hustle.
Business is Everywhere
It doesn’t matter where you are, you generally have an opportunity to meet a potential client. Notice the word, “opportunity”. I use the word “opportunity” because that is all I am looking for when I am talking to people. I simply want the opportunity to show them that I can make their home buying or home selling experience better. When holding an open house you are looking for an opportunity to assist someone purchase a house. When you sit for floor duty you are looking for an opportunity to assist someone with their real estate needs. Nothing is guaranteed and the hustler knows that, they just want the opportunity.
Successful real estate agents create opportunities. They don’t wait for business to come to them, they seek out the business. Whether it’s sitting on floor duty, holding open houses, attending networking events, posting on social media, making phone calls or sending out direct mail pieces, they are constantly searching for opportunities. Successful real estate agents hustle each and every day and actually thrive on the art of the hustle. If hustling doesn’t come naturally to you, think of what will motivate you to hustle. Maybe for you it’s a new car, saving for your child’s’ education, a vacation or saving for an early retirement. Whatever your motivation is, it should be big enough so that you will want and need to get your hustle on…every day. Hustle doesn’t have to be sleazy. It can be accomplished with style and finesse.
