Quiet as it’s kept, there is no secret to success. There are no “secrets” from top producers.
To be a successful real estate agent you have to learn the art of the hustle…and I’m not talking about the dance.
You Have to Hustle
The term hustle can be viewed in a negative manner or a positive manner.
In real estate it’s a positive. Ask any successful agent what they do to generate business and you will see what I mean when I say they hustle.
Successful agents put in the work to be successful. They don’t wait for business to fall in their lap, they go after it.
Get On a Schedule
We all waste a lot of time and have the gall to say we’re busy. It’s time to remove that word from your vocabulary.
My father taught me at a very early age that people find time for things they want to do.
Start by keeping a time journal. Make note of what you do every minute of the day.
If you’re like most people you will be surprised at how much of your time is wide open or wasted.
Next, check out the activities you do every day and determine if you can do them more efficiently.
If you do any activity more than twice you need to create a system to be more efficient.
Most people have heard of Murphy’s Law, however Parkinson’s Law is my personal favorite.
In summary it says, activities expand to the time you give them.
Think about. If you have six hours to complete a task, it will take you six hours. But if you only have three hours to complete that task, it will take you three hours.
Have you ever noticed how much you accomplish when you have a lot to do?
That’s Parkinson’s Law at work.
When You Work Really Work
Being a successful real estate agent takes work, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to work eight hours a day, seven days a week.
Have a good work ethic. Put your head down and do the work.
Focus on what you want to get done each and every day and don’t stop until everything has been completed.
Focus on your long term goals, this will help you complete the tasks you don’t want to do.
It’s easy to get distracted and thrown off course. The Internet is the perfect trap, specifically social media and Google searches.
When you find yourself getting off track, which will happen, ask yourself this question:
“Is this getting me closer to achieving my goal of “X”?”
That simple question will get you back to the task at hand. Post it on your computer if you need to.
The success rate for new real estate agents is tragic. According to the NAR, over 75% of agents leave the business after five years.
Be determined not to be a statistic.
Do everything within your power to be the best real estate agent in your market, in the country, or in the world.
Don’t make excuses, do the work and keep doing the work until you achieve the level of success you desire.
Being a real estate agent isn’t rocket science, but it’s not as easy as it looks.
Successful agents make it look easy.
Successful real estate agents create opportunities. They don’t wait for business to come to them, they seek out the business.
- Sitting on floor duty
- Holding open houses
- Attending networking events
- Posting on social media
- Making phone calls
- Sending out direct mail pieces
It’s important to remember that no one owes you anything. Your broker doesn’t have a drawer full of leads just waiting for you.
Successful agents are constantly searching for business opportunities.
Successful real estate agents hustle each and every day and actually thrive on the art of the hustle.
Business opportunities are everywhere, be aware, listen and respond.
Hustle doesn’t have to be sleazy. It can be accomplished with style and finesse and can be quite rewarding.
Just ask any successful real estate agent.
