If you ask anyone how they are doing, chances are they’ll say they are “busy”. Have you ever noticed how often people use the word “busy”. Buy why? A a couple of years ago I decided to limit my use of the word because I felt it was being overused. It wasn’t easy eliminating a word that has come to describe my work and home life, but I gave it my best.
Busy and Motion
At the Inman Connect conference in New York last week, the quote, “Don’t Mistake Motion for Progress” was in the background of a presenters’ slide. The quote popped out at me and I couldn’t get it out of my mind. It brought me back to the word “busy”. “Busy” and “Motion” were becoming interchangeable in my mind. In trying to figure out why I came to the conclusion that because we are in “motion”, we are “busy” and therefore we think we are being productive. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
Three Simple Strategies to Start Using Today
One of the most difficult things to get used to as a real estate agent is the fact that there is no one who is telling you when to work or how long to work or even what to do when you work. How you work and what you do is completely up to you. So with all of this freedom and flexibility, how do you move towards becoming a profitable real estate agent? Here are my three simple strategies you can start doing today to help your business thrive.
Put Yourself on a Schedule
Tasks take as much time as you give them. That is the short version of Parkinson’s Law. Think about it. If you have six hours to complete a task, it takes six hours. If you only have three hours to complete the same task, it takes three hours. We ALL waste a lot of time. Myself included. When you put yourself on a schedule it’s easier to hold yourself accountable. It’s more difficult to go down the Internet rabbit hole when you only allot yourself thirty minutes every afternoon to surf the web. When you have a schedule you know when you have openings to show houses or meet with prospective clients. When you have a schedule in place it’s easier to achieve a balance between work and home. As a real estate agent you don’t have to work 8 hours a day to be successful, but you do have to work. By putting yourself on a schedule, when you work, you’ll really work.
Do The Real Work First
It doesn’t matter if you are a morning person or an afternoon person, whenever you begin your work day, do the real work first. Make that difficult call, work on your presentation or meet with your team first thing. By doing so you’ve taken control of your day. You’ve handled issues when you wanted to handle them, not when you were forced to handle them. Lastly, you’ve freed up space in your brain to think about the rest of your daily activities and you’ve lessened your stress and anxiety.
Feel Like You’re Making Progress
It can be difficult to move forward when you don’t feel as though you are making progress. The reason why you may not feel as though you are making progress could be because you have identified activities as “tasks” when they are actually “projects”. A project is something like getting your web site up and running, but it shows up on your “To Do List” as a task. As a result, you don’t feel like you make any progress. What you should do is to breakdown that project into manageable tasks. Instead of having “Work on web site” on your “To Do List”, use “Select testimonials for web site”, “Write bio for web site”, “Select photos for web site”. By doing this you are not simply moving the project from day to day, but you are actually making progress. Don’t mistake projects for tasks. By doing so you can feel defeated before you even get started.
Own Your Success
Being a real estate agent is a job. A real job. As a real estate agent you run your own and run your own business. You, and only you control your destiny. It is up to you to step up and out to make something happen every day because nothing is going to be handed to you. To make the most of your time, both at work and at home you can’t mistake motion for progress. Stick to your schedule as much as possible, do the work and break down your projects into tasks and see what it feels like to have peace of mind and a successful real estate business. You can do this!
